Ottawa artist explores roots, finds resolution in Japanese-Canadian conflict.
In “Cross Currents”, his show at Cube Gallery, Norman continues to reflect those divergent yet symbiotic cultures. In “Sudden Showers # 1”, one of his earlier pieces, a familiar traditional Japanese woodblock print is combined with more European-influenced abstract shapes and colour fields, almost Shadbolt like in appearance. In “Sumo”, a later work, a bright red hand with chopsticks is imposed upon the image, evocative of pop art and graffito. Shocks of the new which overlay and sometimes directly compete with the old woodcut.
