Artist Statement:

"In this series of mixed media illustrations, I have become fixated on the banyan tree and the bodies (real and imagined) it loves to embrace. During a trip through Burma several years ago, I saw a small stone Buddha entirely embedded high in the gnarled, snake-like limbs of a massive banyan. Minutes later, a few metres down the road, I saw a carved spirit figure called a “Nat” entangled in another banyan tree. This tropical tree began to symbolize a powerful force which may ensnare and surround bodies of all kinds. My black and white illustrations begin with this metaphor of a tangled prison which may at one moment entrap in it’s powerful grip, yet in the next moment may nestle, nurture and cocoon."
