_____

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

There are many of us here who are living in the diaspora - whose history is made up of cultural traumas - whose ancestors have experienced genocide and colonialism much like the Indigenous people whose lands we have settled on. It is our responsibility to recognize and be aware of the privilege that we have and to honour the people who came before us. In Our Tongues acknowledges that we are gathered here on traditional and unceded Algonquin territory and we are grateful for the opportunity to do so.
_____

RECONNAISSANCE:

ACCESSIBILITY:
(with the consultation of our friends at Ability First Ottawa (http://abilityfirstottawa.org/
)

- The venue is wheelchair friendly, however due to a pole, there is a limit to the access of the bathroom. For people that need full care, it will be best to go beforehand. The closest location with accessible, public bathroom is: Bayview Station.

Other:
Beyond The Pale Brewery (250 City Centre) open til 10pm. Full access.
Carleton Pub (223 Armstrong) & Ministry of Coffee (1013 Wellington St.) open late, have both stated they can help with access to bathrooms, though at Ministry there is no large stall.

- There is no ramp, but the lip is small enough and someone will be available to help with popping up to enter.

- The venue is first floor access. However, it is small with a capacity of 40 people standing, so there are limitations on pivot/movement.

- The back row of the venue will be reserved with people with wheelchair/mobility needs. The front will be reserved with mats, blankets for lying down/sitting.

- There will be people on hand to help with anyone with mobility needs

***We apologize for any inconvenience. We're working with the venue to ensure that accessibility needs are met with proper consultation and adequate funding.

ABOUT:

In Our Tongues Reading and Art Series is dedicated specifically to showcasing BIPoC poets, writers, musicians and other artists, including those across the gender spectrum. It is intended to create a welcoming and nurturing space for these artists to present/perform their work, increase their visibility, and address a literary and artistic gap in Ottawa.

Not only will it enrich and compliment Ottawa’s literary and artistic environment, it will also expand the literary and artistic offerings in Ottawa and reflect the diversity of Canadian writing and arts. It is hoped that this monthly event will foster artistic growth and development, as well as meaningful connection and support for BIPoC poets, writers, musicians and other artists.

We are a new, small non-profit, currently without institutional support. However, we are committed to honouring artists by compensating them for their work. We suggest a donation of $5.00 (or more if you have the means) at the door to help us defray rental and artists’ fees.

We look forward to welcoming you to the launch of In Our Tongues Reading and Art Series!

Sincerely,
In Our Tongues Team:
Shery Alexander Heinis
Mailyne K. Briggs
