This exhibit showcases the work of five youths who, over the past year, have developed critical, creative works that reconsider the popular representation of trans* folks and offer dynamic, expansive, and profound understandings of trans* identities and experiences.

In 1991, trans theory pioneer Sandy Stone suggested that the trans body is a genre in and of itself, “a set of embodied texts whose potential for productive disruption of structured
spectra of desire has yet to be explored.”

Trans Genre presents the work of 5 local artists (fin lee, ev, T, Leon, and Rose Clancey) who reflect on the experience of moving through the world in ways that, as described by Stone, “productively disrupt” traditional terms of social and bodily engagement.

When language, books, the internet, and mainstream popular culture fail to provide us with answers, our bodies provide shelter and offer us a space to explore, play, reimagine, negotiate and challenge the external structures that seek to constrain us. Finding solutions within ourselves, art provides us with limitless ways to create the knowledge, ideas, and worlds that we need.
