Dear Freaks: Disastrous Diaries + Regrettable Letters
9:00 PM on Monday May. 7th, 2018
Black Squirrel Books, 1073 Bank St.
Price: FREE

At some point, we've all revisited old diaries, letters, poems, or childhood stories and wondered: what the hell was I thinking? Who even is this person? And why does everything I wrote read like one long Evanescence lyric?

Inspired by the Mortified series,"Dear Freaks" is an opportunity to revisit all those cringe-y, freaky feelings that we've tried (and often failed) to put into words. Examples could be:

- An angsty or lovesick diary entry
- Letters or cards you wrote to a friend, family, parent, etc.
- Letters you DIDN'T write/send, but wish you had
- An ode to the family dog
- a story you wrote in primary school
- Something you once legitimately considered "song lyrics" or "poetry"
- A series of notes you passed in class
- a blog entry from peak MySpace days (or Tumblr if you're that young)

We also encourage entries of stories that recount a particularly bad e-mail or texting experience, if you've already erased the evidence.

If you would like to be scheduled reader for the evening, please contact Holly at hollymtay@gmail.com. In your e-mail, please give a brief (50-100 word) description of the pieces you will be reading. You will have 5 minutes of stage time, so you can pick several short entries, or a couple of longer ones!

You are also welcome to simply come through, grab a drink, and listen. I mean, we would love/prefer if you'd read too, obviously. But like. No pressure.

"Dear Freaks" is a FREE community event.

This event, as with all events occurring in Ottawa, is taking place on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.

**We will not tolerate any racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, or ableist language or behaviour. Please use your best discretion when selecting material to read for the evening.**

Accommodation Note: The main floor of Black Squirrel Books, where the event will be held, is accessible via a stop gap at the main entrance. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are located in the basement, which is not accessible to folks using mobility devices. Bathrooms are gender neutral. If you have any additional accessibility concerns, please send us a direct message and we will be happy to work with you!
