Quebec approves assisted suicide. The Supreme Court declares the
federal government's prohibition unconstitutional. The Government asks
for more time.
"There is a great need for a true debate on this issue at a national
level. I believe in this work and the importance of theatre in
exploring difficult human dilemmas. We doctors are too stuck in our
ghettoes and we need shaking up. Arthur Milner is man for it — he’s
not afraid of stirring the pot.” —Dr. Anne D. M. Hennessey, MB FRCP(C)
At 93-and-a-half, my healthy and active mother took a turn for the
worse. I accompanied her to the doctor. The doctor closed a file on
his desk and turned to her: "What can I do for you, Rose?" My mother
said, “Doctor, I would like to die. Can you help me?" And the doctor
said, "No, and don’t ask me again."
What do you do when your mother asks you to help her die?
"My mind waged a war on my heart, as Getting To Room Temperature took
me on a journey through the concepts and practicalities of assisted
suicide. Our guide, Robert Bockstael, took us seamlessly through the
terrain, with humour, intelligence and grace.”
