About Odissi Dance

Odissi dance originates from the Orissa province in India. Based on archaeological evidence, it is considered the oldest dance form in India originating from the temples of Orissa. The dance is characterized by various Bhangas (Stances), which involves stamping of the foot and striking various postures as found in Indian Sculptures. Under British rule, Odissi dance was pushed near to extinction, but has been revived since through the efforts of scholars and the last few remaining survivors who practiced the art. Now Odissi has taken its place as a dominant classical art form of dance again practised in India and across the world.
