Berlin Alchemy part I: Kolb-Schindler-Schubert

One of the interesting things about Berlin is that although different genres of music coexist happily like everywhere else, the musician that play them are not segregated in these genres but instead move silently (!) from one genre to another. Some of them may officially belong to a specific genre and as a result, there are inevitable cross-breeding going on. The Pöllat Project is a cross breed between classical avant-garde and improvised music (Jazz). Here the prevailing quest for texture from the classical zone finds an echo in the improvisation zone all in a symphonic atmosphere. Texture is achieved using an instrumental configuration between brass and reeds with one musician being active on both sides. Philipp Kolb, Tuba, trumpet Udo Schindler, Bass-Clarinet, baritone and soprano saxophones, cornet Frank Paul Schubert, alto and soprano saxophones Now, the best part is that the two first musicians are actually based in Munich and are day-giggers. Schindler is even an architect and has built a venue that he calls “Salon für Klang” where he organizes regular classical avant-garde and improvised music house concerts. Finally, for those that think that the days of CDs are over, musicians of course have a different opinion and will go great length in order to ensure this doesn’t happen. The Pöllat CD we are playing tonight comes with something unusual, the case is a piece of pine wood carefully carved to hold the CD.
