Ethiopian Jazz

Tonight we feature improvised music from Ethiopia. We focus heavily on the music of composer & musician Mulatu Astatke, known as the father of Ethiojazz. We will also feature singer & band leader Alemayehu Eshete, saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya, and close the program with a wonderful collaboration between Astatke and the UK-based Heliocentrics.

Getatchew Mekurya plays almost though influenced by the free-jazz movement though he claims to have developed his technique in isolation. In recent years, he has recorded with Dutch avant-gardists The Ex and also played Ottawa last summer.

We close the program with an adventurous collaboration between the father of Ethiojazz and the Heliocentrics, a UK-based ensemble that manages to look forward and backward at the same time. In addition to their own recordings, they've also worked with Iranian music virtuoso Lloyd Miller, and DJ Shadow (among others)
