Welcome to the Riot. Please let me know if you are listening. It gets lonely down in the Culture Bunker.

Hey Rat-Bastard (if i may call you by first name), and all fellow freaks & weirdos, ' I hope ye have discovered Tom Wait 'Glitter and Doom'. AMAZING top to bottom in a very Waits-ian way. Live. The band is just totally JAW DROPPER! Including a killer version of "Get Behind The Mule". Sayin'

Johnny Loan
Mule never guess the theme today

"Mule Train", incredible sound there. One of the first songs I ever heard on a recorded player. "Sixteen Tons" was another one. Nice cover by Mr. Dawson. Roy Buchanan

Wait until you here the Hard Feelings cover of the Roy Buchanan instrumental.

I remember seeing Roy Buchanan at the Ottawa Civic Centre n about 1972. He was playing a 40 pound marble bodied Telecaster. Incredible sustain on those notes. Years later saw him at Barrymore's a couple of times before he died. i

Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Evan Johns....those Telecaster players from the D.C. area seemed to be doomed.

Frankie
Very true Renny. Also with those players, the tone all in the fingers, not a pedal board to be seen. (or rather heard)

2:36 PM, October 18th, 2023
Renny G (host)
Thank goodness Link Wray played a Gibson.

2:38 PM, October 18th, 2023
Frankie
My goodness my typing is bad today. Should read: "the tone is all in the fingers"

Did you know that neither Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown nor Albert Collins played with a pick?

2:47 PM, October 18th, 2023
Frankie
Ha ha yes,.

2:47 PM, October 18th, 2023
Renny G (host)
Special thanks to Rockin' Rioteer Nancy, for lending me the Greg Demchuck & The Du-Rite Aces recordings.

2:51 PM, October 18th, 2023
Frankie
Did not know that about either musician. Gatemouth is (was ?) also a fine fiddle player, plays it country style tucked against his abdomen.

2:54 PM, October 18th, 2023
Renny G (host)
Yeah, Gatemouth died in 2005. He also played mandolin (with which he used a pick).

3:03 PM, October 18th, 2023
Frankie
I'm learning more about Gatemouth. I think he had weed in that pipe he smoked.

Oh yeah, sometimes. He was quite the character. Great sense of humour.

We would rather be at Rockaway Beach that Rat Beach. For those who might not know: "Rockaway Beach is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens." This is one of the great "Dee Dee" songs.

That guy Simon Chardiet lives a block away from Rockaway Beach. He surfs nearly every day. He supplements his income by teaching surfing and practicing upright bass on the boardwalk.

usin' a pick 's like wearin' a rubber...

3:21 PM, October 18th, 2023
Frankie
You've tied it all together beautifully. I know Brian Wilson never surfed, I wonder if Dee Dee did? Great show, thanks.

3:21 PM, October 18th, 2023
Frankie
Ha ha Donny, I tend to agree.

3:23 PM, October 18th, 2023
Renny G (host)
Joey Ramone used to surf.
