Some of my recent favourites, Derrick Skye, Constantinople, Anna Thorvaldsottir, Hossein Alizadeh; Morocco, Senegal, Mali, South Africa

Filling in with for the regular TIE crew, I'll be sharing recent and older favourites of mine: Derrick Skye, Constantinople, Anna Thorvaldsottir, Hossein Alizadeh and the Rembrandt Trio and much more.
Starting off with a new album of compositions by the fantastic American composer Derrick Skye. His joyful, exuberant music takes in the whole world. The first piece is for violin, tar, and electronics, and is heavily influenced by Persian music as well as Ghanaian rhythm. The second is for string quintet and is based on the Gospel and Blues music Skye heard at home and in churches growing up.

Constantinople is one of Canada's greatest musical treasures, and they continue to expand and explore musical traditions in ways no one else does. Their second album with Italian tenor and musicologist, Marco Beasley, features a mix of 15th and 16th century Italian songs and Persian music. You will not hear Italian Renaissance singing interspersed with singing in Farsi anywhere else!

Continuing the thread of unique collaborations with Persian influence is the recent collaboration between Persian master Hossein Alizadeh and the unusual Dutch Rembrandt Trio. On the surface they seem to be a standard jazz trio with piano, bass, drums. However, the instruments they play are very unusual for a jazz trio. Leader Rembrandt Frerichs plays the fortepiano, the 18th and early 19th century version of the piano; Tony Overwater plays a bass violone is a six string fretted instrument; drummer Vinsent Planjer plays his "whisperkit", which is an assemblage of many percussion instruments across time and geography. On this album they are joined by Hossein Alizadeh, a revered master on the tar and setar. On this album however, he performs on the shurangiz, which is a custom instrument designed to his specifications, which is like a midpoint between the tar and the setar. So these four instruments together are heard on this album and nowhere else. The Rembrandt Trio had an earlier album with Kayhan Kalhor, and just released a new album with Persian vocalist Mohammad Motamedi which we will hear on my own show this Thursday or next.

Continuing my fervent musical proselytizing for one of my favourite composers, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, with new recordings of two of her recent orchestral pieces. It seems like she can't create music that is not miraculous, and the symphony orchestra is the best canvas for her extraordinary, cosmic, immense music. It is like the movement of grand celestial bodies through many small gestures. But still very human in scale at the same time.
