This Island Earth
Sunday April 21st, 2019 with Manmohan Panesar
Lots of gems from two great new compilations, Happy Easter, and a tribute to the late great Kenyan vocalist/musician, Ayub Ogada

Welcome to THIS ISLAND EARTH, CKCU's world music program, broadcast every Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. EST. Stay with us this afternoon (Sunday 1-4pm) at CKCU 93.1 FM in the greater Ottawa area or at ckcufm.com from anywhere around the world.
Happy Easter if you are celebrating this weekend. The first track feature some polyphonic vocals from Corsica.

Now we dip into one of the aforementioned compilations, a 6 disc collection of quirky tracks from all over the globe. Lots of electronica, rap, funk, etc but also several gems from all over the globe, including many from the Francophonie. We start in Japan...

Then we check out another treat, a second new compilation called "Par les damné.e.s de la terre," featuring French music of resistance from all over the globe. AS noted by the title of the compilation, the curator was inspired by the great theorist/radical from Martinique, Franz Fanon and his epic book, "The Wretched of the Earth." We start with this compilation with the Quebecois duo, poet Claude Péloquin and electronic wizard Jean Sauvageau. I love this track!

The Kenyan vocalist and nyatiti (plucked lyre) musician, Ayub Ogada, sadly passed away on Feb.1. I only recently learned of his passing and will spin a couple of cuts from his most recent recording, with guitarist Trevor Warren. It's a fine album with Ayubs's trademark soulful vocals.

We don't know when it actually started in it's current format as a 'world music' program. Prior to out collective taking over, the regular host was the wonderful, Tony Daye. who hosted this program for many, many years and also featured music from all over the globe.

Darn, i hate this program sometimes. Faaaaar too much happy homework to dig into! ;^) Big fan of compilations. Well, at least the well curated and produced/mastered ones. TONS of new finds to be had on good ones, and often for cheap too. Will be digging into these for sure.

PB, I love compilations as well. The Nova one is really inexpensive for 6 CDs. Some great stuff there!
