The Wavelength
Monday July 3rd, 2023 with Joe Reilly
Hour 1 is all about RBC Bluesfest and Hour 2 is for The Cure and some new releases by Sigur Ros and Sunnsetter

We open with music from artists appearing at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest. The festival kicks off this Thursday, July 6 and runs until Sunday, July 16. There is a lot of great music featured as part of RBC Ottawa Bluesfest and we spin just a little bit of it for you this evening. Check out the full lineup and ticket information at the Bluesfest webpage: https://ottawabluesfest.ca/ Next up we play a couple from The Cure, as I had the amazing opportunity to see the band perform in Montreal on June 16th. It was one of those shows that leaves you buzzing for days and every time I put on the two songs we played tonight (A Forest and Disintegration) I just feel drawn back to the concert. They did 1 hour and 45 minutes of deep, dark Cure songs and then came back for a 30 minute encore set of more brooding darkness. After that they returned for a second encore that was 45 minutes long and featured all the hits. Check out the setlist for the night here - it was a night to remember for sure. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-cure/2023/centre-bell-montreal-qc-canada-1ba6353c.html We then spend some time listening to three songs from the brand new Sigur Ros album Atta. It is a beautiful, atmospheric album and the group is touring North America with an orchestra to recreate the sound live. Sadly no Ottawa or Montreal dates on the tour. Here is an interesting article in The Guardian where the band members talk about the personal turmoil they went through around and through the creation of this album and how the quietness of the recording reflects some of the challenges they faced. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jun/16/i-felt-violated-it-was-a-dark-period-for-all-of-us-sigur-ros-on-their-nightmarish-recent-years Finally we wrap up with two songs from a Canadian indie artist Sunnsetter. I just stumbled upon this album last week and I'm LOVING it. It was released in March and is definitely going to be one of my favourite albums of the year. For more information about Sunnsetter check out these links: https://sunnsetter.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/SUNNSETTER/ I found this piece about Sunnsetter: "The evening will start off with a solo set by Sunnsetter a.k.a. Andrew McLeod, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and recording engineer living in the rural area of Norfolk County, ON. Across Sunnsetter’s many self-released albums, McLeod fearlessly crosses genres, including ambient, singer-songwriter, shoegaze, post-rock, slowcore and others. McLeod is also a member of Daniel Monkman’s project Zoon as well as Ombiigizi, a collaboration between Monkman and Adam Sturgeon (Status Non Status) — both Polaris Music Prize shortlisted artists." Thanks for listening and enjoy the music!
