Antônio Carlos Jobim and the Brazilian Bossa Nova wave
Antônio Carlos Jobim, the "father of bossa nova", was born January 25, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Jobim's "The Girl From Ipanema" is the second most recorded/covered song of all-time, and he wrote numerous songs that are standards today. Jobim was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991. "Tom" Jobim died aged 67 in New York City.
The Bossa Nova sound was established with the soundtrack to the 1959 film Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro), composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luis Bonfa. Bossa Nova stemmed from Brazilian samba music and dance that dates back to the 1600s, established by Black slaves from Africa during the Portuguese colonization of Brazil.
Today's episode comprises mainly Brazilian compositions from the first wave of bossa nova (new wave or new trend, in Portuguese). Thanks to American producer Creed Taylor, Bossa Nova made a big splash worldwide in the early 1960s as artists such as Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Herbie Mann, Coleman Hawkins, and Vince Guaraldi played the music of Brazilians Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luis Bonfá, João Gilberto, Baden Powell, Edu Lobo, Jorge Ben, etc.
