Hi everyone Welcome to this evening's rather special edition of "Bedtime Stories." After Hawkwind's founding member Dave Brock, Richard is the band's longest serving member, since 1988. In tonight's Part 1 of my interview with Richard, we mostly chat about how he became a drummer, memories of two bands he played in before joining Hawkwind, with recollections of attending/playing free (or mostly free) festivals in the 1970s. Richard also describes how he came to join the band in 1988. Musically, tonight's playlist - mostly chosen by Richard - is quite different from his choices in next week's Part 2. THANKS FOR TUNING IN!.

Growing grass—not necessarily for the lawn. You just never know in which direction a conversation will grow. I can honestly say that up until now, I’d never heard of The Demented Stoats. Thank you CKCU!

Richard described the Demented Stoats as folk originating from Hereford who'd teamed up whilst living in a squat in Bath. They decided to play as a band and as Richard didn't play an instrument he was given the role of playing drums, but had no kit at that point. He went on to describe how he bought his first kit - a Premier - from someone he knew whilst taking casual work as a gardener. Who took an interest in how to grow "grass", but, no, not necessarily for the lawn :-)
