In this episode, George Martin of Carnism Debunked speaks about veganism and carnism, provides tips to help people go vegan, and explains why the vegan movement should be inclusive of people with differing views on human political issues.

This week, I am pleased to present my interview with the vegan animal rights activist George Martin. George is the creator of Carnism Debunked, a website and YouTube channel dedicated to debunking anti-vegan arguments. He also advocates for veganism by doing street outreach and social media activism. In this interview, George speaks about how Gary Yourofsky’s famous speech led him to become vegan. He tells me what carnism is, why veganism is a moral imperative, and why tradition and culture are not good excuses to continue exploiting animals. We discuss how to overcome two of the mental blocks that stop some people from going vegan; why carnism is a form of ableism; why the vegan movement needs to be inclusive of people with differing opinions on human political issues; what the bigotry of low expectations is and why it’s wrong; and whether it’s a good idea to refer to animal exploitation as a “holocaust” or “slavery”. Finally, George tells me about the new vegan advocacy group We the Free. This was a very thought-provoking discussion.
