The Celebration / Lone Star - Do good Deeds when Helge freezes over

With little local theatre news as quarantines spread, it’s time to forget the new and reflect on the old with Josh M.’s two birthday picks, two of his favourites of all time. First, there’s talk of Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen/The Celebration (1998), the first film in the Dogme 95 movement, which is about a family party gone awry. The hosts talk about the oft-broken rules of Dogme, Lars Von Trier, The Celebration’s jarring tone that gets better, and the vast ensemble including a standout Thomas Bo Larsen. The other subject is John Sayles’ lethargic, character-based murder mystery of sorts Lone Star (1996). The hosts are effusive about Sayles’ plotting, the ensemble (especially scene-stealers Kris Kristofferson, Elizabeth Peña, and Ron Canada), and some non-spoilery thoughts on the bold, controversial ending. Veering away from new releases, in future episodes the Joshes will have plenty of recommendations for watching at home, including some bingeworthy TV next Monday.
