In the 1960s, Donna Jean Thatcher worked as a session singer in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, supporting recordings by Cher, Duane Allman, and #1 hits "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge and "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis Presley. She moved to California in 1970, married keyboardist Keith Godchaux, then introduced her husband to Jerry Garcia. Donna and Keith were members of the Dead from 1971 to 1979.
