The Groove
Saturday July 4th, 2020 with CKCU CREW
This weeks episode of The Groove will feature sounds from two Ottawa based Djs: Melo-T and DJ RLLY B

This first part of this weeks episode is brought to you by local selector DJ RLLY B. It is said that the spirit of house music has the ability to transcend from its forefathers to its current students who study the craft in hopes to connect with the community on a deeper human level. This statement rings true for DJ RLLY B. The young Canadian DJ who now resides in Ottawa by way of Guelph, Ontario is on a mission to share the many shapes and sounds of electronic music varying from deep melodies to minimal techno. RLLY B’s humble beginnings started with learning the craft of DJing alongside his older brother and close friends have since been taking up a notch with his determination and drive.

Having founded the House and Techno Club at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. RLLY B has become a mainstay in the Ottawa Electronic Dance scene. Hosting events at Ottawa’s iconic dance music mecca, Mercury Lounge, and being a featured DJ for NIGHT Lights - Art and Light Festival which is curated by the dynamic duo Dems and Doll. In a very short amount of time, this young DJ has shared the stage with some of the cities best selectors while also opening for international acts such as Niko Schwind and Djuma Soundsystem with the Music.Art.Ppl crew back in the fall of 2019.

The second half of this program features sounds from MELO-T. Tumelo “MELO-T” Ponalo can’t imagine a time before music. For as long as the Zimbabwean-Canadian musician can remember, music has always been there, serving as a driving force of creativity and self-expression. As a young child, MELO-T recalls being intrinsically drawn to the rhythms made by the Marimba, mbira instruments, and Ngoma drums, and inspired by the catchy and upbeat tunes heard from pop stars on the radio. Now living in Ottawa, Canada, MELO-T has all but lost the musical sounds and cadence native to his home country. As an established and highly sought songwriter and producer, under his musical project and label “Music by Melo,” he unleashes his creative birthright and makes music that transcends both demographics and borders. Similarly, as a DJ, known as “MELO-T,” his original mixes regularly serve as the soundtrack to packed venues and vivacious dance floors.

Drawing inspiration from South African DJ Black Coffee and Zimbabwe’s Oliver Mtukudzi and Sango, MELO-T’s music embrace a variety of distinctly unique genres—hip-hop, reggaeton, Latin music, and R&B, to name a few—into one pure and melodic sound known as “Afro Fusion.” Not to be confused with Afro Beats, the increasingly mainstream genre-crossing airwaves from Africa, Afro Fusion is a delicate blend few have managed to master. This rare sound is just one of the many reasons why MELO-T remains one of Ottawa’s hottest artists. And his talent hasn’t gone unnoticed; over the years, his originally produced music has earned a spot on the turntables of popular Canadian DJs, including Rise Ashen, Trevor Walker, JFUN, Akpossaul, Ray Ray and DJ Kam.
