Nothing but Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry

Interview with Thomm Jutz, featuring a collaboration between this American singer-songwriter-producer and acclaimed British guitar player and producer Martin Simpson. Titled “Nothing but Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry”, this project centered upon English ballads collected in the early 1900s by the great English folklorist Cecil Sharp and his assistant Maud Karpeles from Appalachian folk singers Mary Sands and Jane Gentry. Numerous of these ballads would eventually become absorbed in early North American folk, old timey and bluegrass music. (Martin Simpson also produced Newfoundland singer-songwriter Matthe Byrne’s recent new release “Stealing Time” the idea of which I think Matthew may have drawn from fellow Newfoundlander Ron Hyne’s “Stealing Genius”!)
