Friday Drive
Friday September 11th, 2026 with Nick Williams
High to the Sky

Welcome to the September 11 edition to Friday Drive. There were only really to ways to approach this show, either carry on and ignore the inauspicious date or acknowledge the events that took place twenty five years ago, I guess I’m choosing the latter option. For myself personally September 11 2001 was a huge head trip as my future wife had just given birth to our first child 3 days before and we were floating high in the sky. To have our new world of three sabotaged by massive external forces so soon after Maya was born seemed like a huge injustice, one that took many weeks to process as we and everyone around us came to terms with the new reality. So today’s show is going to start off with a few tunes that I feel come close to capturing the highs and lows that were flowing through my veins on this day 25 years ago, and then we will move on from there. Most all the show is jazz, but not bob per se. More loose, funky and searching, stick with me I’m hoping it’s going to be a bit of a cleanse. TGIF all, happy week.

Two albums dropped this year - Heritage (Part Two) and First People II — both built on the same idea: powwow drums and sound system bass, side by side. Now they’re bringing that to one stage, together.

For over a decade, Shub (formerly known as DJ Shub) has been at the forefront of a movement that reshaped the landscape of Indigenous electronic music. A trailblazer who coined the powwow-step genre and a former member of the Juno-winning A Tribe Called Red, Shub has spent years blending the ancient rhythms of powwow music with the pulse of modern beats, scratching, and bass-heavy production. With a new name and vision, Shub is stepping beyond the DJ booth, emerging as a composer, storyteller, and artist dedicated to expanding the reach of Indigenous music.

Handsome Tiger, an Anishinaabe Métis and North African music producer/DJ hailing from Turtle Island and currently based in Vancouver, BC, blends traditional sounds from his heritage with other Indigenous and contemporary electronic bass music. His DJ sets fuse various flavors of sound system culture and global club sounds, igniting dance floors wherever he performs.

Sun Ra is always a good start. I recently accidentally allowed a Sun Ra documentary delete from my Netflix account. Bell replaced my hardware PVR lost year ( which I had completely paid for as per my original contract saying a tone of features to having a "cloud" PVR. None of what the tech promised was true including a short timeline to save programming on the PVR cloud. access. Still makes my blood boil !
