Friday Drive
Friday April 3rd, 2026 with Trevor Walker
[ForTheLoveOfJimReillyTributeMixTape]

Happy Friday “Drivers” fam and welcome to this week’s show! It’s been a bit tough over the last week and a bit, personally, and I’m sure for any of you out there who knew my very good friend, Jim Reilly, that I consider my brother. Today’s show is dedicated to JIm and will be a reflection on the music that makes me think of my dear friend from over the years. Songs that come to mind when thinking of Jim during the magic times. Jim was talented, good looking, charming, funny and sometimes grumpy and all around amazing human and I don’t just say this through rose coloured glasses that sometimes emerge after losing someone you love. I can’t imagine how many people he touched in some positive way throughout his years as a radio presenter, club DJ, print editor, designer, painter and just a well regarded in Ottawa’s nightlife over the years. I met Jim in the late 80’s during my years at “Club Zinc”, where he held a residency for a bit, and also caught him on CKCU on Friday, funny enough, around this time slot. We became what I consider closer friends starting in the early 90’s and he has been a constant presence since the beginning of my dive into the DJ / proper night life scene. Though he sometimes came across as a bit of a grouch and would regularly shoot off at the mouth in someway of another it was always with love and a brilliant sarcasm that would always come across with a humorous and loving twist. Our good mutual friend, Jefferson Park, referred to him as a Unicorn in the sense that people who knew him would react with a certain type of awe if they were fortunate enough to cross his path *in the wild. I believe this kind of reaction is because he made everyone feel like they were his best friend and very special with how warmly he would greet them and the respect and love he would to convey to those anyone who crossed his path. It’s hard to describe how truly generous and caring he was. I can’t count how many people I’ve spoken with who recount him calling and later texting for Christmas, New Year well wishes to birthdays and all the mothers he would reach out to on Mother’s day. Truly remarkable! JIm was an amazing DJ with an ability to make any crowd move with his deep knowledge of so many genres from Punk and alternative to Funk, Reggae, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass with a special love and understanding of the greatest music from the 80’s. I kind of resent how many different types of music he was into simply because it makes today’s show extremely difficult with the impossible task of fitting all the types of music and amazing songs into a very short two hours. So all you “on demanders” can get the extras that will be exclusively available by streaming. That being said, I will do my best from a somewhat subjective perspective by referencing our chats about music coupled with some of the songs I witnessed him spin that I could tell he truly loved. Big love to Jim’s brother Joe, also a CKCU presenter, for having Jim and my mutual long time friends Serge, Ollie and Balu on his show, “The Wavelength”, to share some stories, thoughts and a few tunes in loving memory. If you knew Jim or not I would recommend checking out this and next week’s episodes of Joe’s show to get a glimpse into the man, the legend, Jim Reilly. The Wavelength 2026-03-30 Link: https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/161/74804.html We’ve lost a grumpy angel with a heart of gold, rest well my friend. I’ll be running through a variety of music that I remember Jim loving and that reminds me of him from throughout the years and will be letting the music speak without much interuption. More music less talk is the motto. Happy listening, thank you all for taking the time and hope you enjoy this week’s offering.

Tickets & packages available at gridwrks.ca

We view the dance floor as a sacred space. It’s a place where people can get lost in the music and sensations; a place where we hope people feel free to express themselves without words. Help us keep the dancefloor sacred by trying to keep conversations on the dancefloor to a minimum and move to the sidelines/back of the dancefloor or to the seating areas for conversations

Costumes or theme-wear are always optional, however we do try to offer an alternative to the stereotypical beauty norms of traditional night clubs. As such, we invite our guests to get silly and creative and to wear what makes them feel fun, sexy, beautiful, or extra

We ask guests to respect each others’ personal space and boundaries. Try to give people room to dance. If someone is in the zone, let them be. If someone does not want to dance, respect their no

You can appreciate each others’ beauty and creative costumes/dance moves, but someone’s clothing or dancing does not imply consent to touch. Seek clear, enthusiastic and ongoing consent for any physical contact/activity and respect decisions. No means no!
Know your limits - moderation is key! Please practice responsible and safer partying. Protect your ears. Stay Hydrated. Take breaks. Stretch. Take care of yourself and each other - We all want to continue dancing together for a long long time.
See you on the dance floor!

Bringing bubbling pop songs and ambient-electronic selections, we are thrilled to welcome EEJUNGMI to the Champagne Bath this spring in celebration of her debut album Water is a Shifting Mirror, constructed from field recordings of rivers, currents of driving bass, and splashes of the artist's ethereal voice. She will be joined by local multi-genre angel Yolande Laroche, both offering up a hybrid performance of live and DJ'd material.

Experience the show from inside the pool through underwater speakers, in the sauna, or poolside under the sun roof.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
EEJUNGMI
Eejungmi (이정미), the electronic project of Toronto-based artist and DJ Katie Lee, creates music that invites you in with a gentle familiarity. While approachable, her music gradually reveals a surprising depth, pulling listeners into a heavier, more complex emotional space. Anchored in left-field techno, house, and downtempo, she crafts sonic landscapes that coax hidden emotions to the surface.
Whether behind the decks or performing live, Eejungmi explores the delicate balance of tension and release, guiding the room through a journey that drifts between quiet heartache and profound catharsis. This cycle of loss and rebuilding is the foundation of her newly released debut album, Water is a Shifting Mirror. Constructed from field recordings of rivers, the record uses the flow of water to map the unpredictable stages of grief, with her own ethereal voice serving as a steady guide through the current.

Divka
DIVKA is a sonic experience using bygone folk songs from Ukrainian and global women's music-making traditions, weaving a sonic constellation of delicate arpeggios on bandura (esoteric Ukrainian harp), ethereal vocals, and guttural ancient invocations on the viola.
As a sonic rebel reckoning, DIVKA's music is charged with mythology, traditional village singing, and generations of femme power, mystic whimsy, and a dash of vengeance.

I'm still looking for a name for that recurring (a moment ago) honk in earlier hip hop. Some times it's a 'zweep', sometimes it comes around not quite so close. But what are those accents called?

6:26 PM, April 3rd, 2026
Trevor Walker (host)
Hey Benoît, scratching, maybe?

6:29 PM, April 3rd, 2026
Jeremy
Hello everybody, how’s everybody doing tonight? Happy Good Friday respect everybody in here and out there, listening specially to the host with the most.🙏🏼🫶🏻👋👋

Trevor Walker (host)
Hey Jeremy thanks for tuning in and happy Good Friday. Thank you for the comments!

6:39 PM, April 3rd, 2026
B
No, scratching is identifiable as such. I know it, zwip-zwippy done mostly freestyle. No, this is a recurring sample -- could be a sharp shout, maybe modified -- that comes in on beat 4 of the whole tune, except maybe for a bit that's bridge-like. Then, when the hop regains its main thread, the fourth beat emphasis will be there again, or still... "Fourth beat sample", or ",,,accent"?

6:41 PM, April 3rd, 2026
Trevor Walker (host)
Hey B not sure what it could be?

6:42 PM, April 3rd, 2026
B
It acts as a big 'up' at that 4th beat.

6:42 PM, April 3rd, 2026
Trevor Walker (host)
*called

6:43 PM, April 3rd, 2026
Trevor Walker (host)
B not sure what the term could be? Perhaps someone in the chat might have an idea...

CJAY
Trevor Trevor Trevor. As always I check in weekly (usually on-demand) as you always seem to introduce me to something new or tickle my fancy with a beat from my past. The April 3rd show I listened to on Saturday on my way back from Mtl. I had to pinch myself as I thought it was a celebration of my life and was waiting for you to shout out my name - All my RESPECT to your good friend Jim Reilly and sorry for your loss. Best show ever in my humble opinion - not including your days (OG) before 'Friday Drive'. I wish I had a tape deck to record (Playlists are not 4ever). I will listen to this offering for a LONG time. Well Done & R.I.P Jim🙏
