We open in conversation with Tariq Amery who plays flute and saxophone with the upbeat, funky quartet Funk Yo Self. The group is releasing its debut album this week, after being together making music since 2017. We talk to Tariq about how the group came together, the long journey to make this album and how they meld jazz, funk and soul influences into an infectious sound that will appeal to fans of great funk groups like the Isley Brothers and the Brothers Johnson to name just two. He is very familiar with the NACO, because he has been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra since 2015. Due to other commitments, he will not be leading the Orchestra on stage until November 4th and 5th with a program that includes Dvorak's Third Symphony. The NACO season will kick off on September 16 and 17, featuring pianist Makoto Ozone and guest conductor Gemma New leading the Orchestra through Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. We talk to John Storgårds about his penchant for featuring less known works by celebrated composers, his love of performing on the violin and how he is going to balance a wide range of interests and engagements with other musical groups while donning his new role with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
