The Piano, week 1: Vijay Iyer. Arvo Part.

Over the next four programs, I will be featuring several groundbreaking, innovative pianists (more than four!) with both new and older albums. Today, I will be featuring the tremendous American jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, and specifically two of his albums from 2009 and 2010 for the German label ACT. Both of these albums see Iyer at the midpoint of his current career, and he is looking at his placement in the stream of jazz history. They both feature some compositions by Iyer, but mostly arrangements of other's music, ranging from Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Thelonious Monk, Steve Coleman, Stevie Wonder, to M.I.A. The first of these, "Historicity", was his first album to feature his trio with Stephan Crump on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. The second "solo", as the title suggests, is Iyer alone at the piano.

Both album covers of these two ACT recordings feature sculptures by Anish Kapoor. By serendipity, tomorrow is Arvo Part's 91st birthday (last year, I did an Arvo Part special on his 90th birthday https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/72001.html), his largest instrumental work, is a composition for piano and orchestra titled "Lamentate: Homage to Anish Kapoor and his sculpture 'Marsyas'". So I could not help but play it today, tying in the piano, Anish Kapoor sculptures, and Arvo Part's birthday!

Vijay Iyer. Never heard before. Very difficult time signatures to follow... kinda Steve Reichy, kinda Lyle Mays ECMsy... for me. I quite like it.

He is one of my favourite current jazz pianists, I saw him live with the great Carnatic violnist L. Subramaniam a few years back. He played at the Jazz festival two years ago I think, I missed that one sadly. He has been recording for ECM the past decade, and I first heard him on those, but I really love these two earlier ACT recordings.

Hi, little technical issue there, as I went to start the CD and realized I had not put the CD in the player! Radio old school today!

Ah, Arvo Part. At least not too far off from Vijay Iyer. Unlike last week's eclectic jump. And a work I quite like as well.
