Steve Kirkland
HOST OF: Studio J Jukebox, Volume, Contrast, Brilliance
YEAR STARTED: 1982
What's there to tell?
On-air announcer/music programmer since 1983.
Specialy Shows hosted: British Airwaves (80s), the Dinner Hour Special (80s), New Revolutions (80s).
General Music Shows hosted: Thursday Night Overnighter (1983), Monday evening (80s), Saturday morning (80s), Thursday evening (90s), Friday Evening (90s/00s), Saturday Evening (2000s) and, currently Wednesday Afternoon and every third Friday Morning.
None of these general music programs -- (other than the extant Saturday Morning) -- had a "name", until a few years ago when I decided to call my show Volume, Contrast, Brilliance. It's the title of a compilation album by the English band The Monochrome Set (a personal favourite of mine in my very early days at CKCU). I like to think it nicely encapsulates the the eclectic, inventive and informed nature of my shows, which are curated to provide listeners with music across a range of genres, eras and origins. Focus is on providing a listening experience that bridges a wide musical span from the accessible to the obscure.
Studio J Jukebox is a program presented alternately by a collective of three alternating hosts -- I platoon with Mark Keill and Sean McFee -- with similar eclectic sensibilities but a stronger emphasis on more progressive and experimental music(s).
