Friday, February 25, at 7:30 p.m., pianist Xenia Pestova brings an unusual program of new music for piano, toy piano and electronics to MacKay United Church in Ottawa. Described as focused, sensitive and incredibly sensuous by the international press, the New Zealand/Canadian pianist of Russian heritage performs regularly in Europe and has recorded for the Naxos label. Pestova’s last appearance in Ottawa before her relocation to the UK is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts New Music Program, and will feature world premieres of new works for piano and electronics by Steven Naylor (Halifax) and Scott Wilson (Canada/UK), as well as music written for her by Chris Paul Harman (Montreal) and Heather Hindman (Edmonton).
In addition to showcasing MacKay’s new nine-foot concert Yamaha grand piano, Pestova will also play a miniature white Schoenhut toy piano, adding a humorous and theatrical aspect to the performance. Composers Clio Montrey (Canada/Austria), Lou Bunk (Boston) and Derek Hurst (Boston) have written virtuosic works especially for this three-octave keyboard instrument.
