Friday Night Folk is a bi-monthly concert series at Art House Cafe. On the first Friday of every other month Art House Cafe will feature two folk acts, hosted by local singer-songwriter Matt Gower.

Nova Scotia raised, Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Malia Rogers has a clear musical mission: be the first in the room to drop her shield, and in doing so, move others to lower their own.
With sonic references ranging from Feist and Aoife O'Donovan to Dan Mangan and Noah Kahan, Malia's conversational folk offerings carefully balance melancholy and hope – transforming rooms of strangers into rooms of kin with precise lyricism, warmed-honey vocals, fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo.
Malia's debut EP Chameleon draws on folk, bluegrass, and celtic influences to explore enduring themes of identity, relationships, grief, growth, and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of our lives. The six-song collection is "a sonic snapshot of becoming — a musical tide chart that captures the motion of identity, grief, and love in all their patient, persistent forms”.
With compassion and gentle wit, Malia invites you into the corners of her heart the way she would invite you into her family home on the East Coast: put down the heavy bags, stay as long as you need, and take something with you when you go.

Woods of Light is the indie-folk solo project of Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brian Gunther. Operating from his home studio, Ravenwood, in Val-des-Monts, Quebec, he single-handedly writes, records, and mixes his music.

Matt Gower is a Hard Folk singer-songwriter from Ottawa, Ontario. Over the years, Matt has embodied the folk tradition by blending an array of styles into his music. Elements of alt-country, old-time Appalachian tunes, bluegrass & roots-rock underscore a powerful voice that's vulnerable, honest & dynamic. The truth, technique & talent he's come to embrace are all hard-earned.
Currently Matt Gower is the host and curator of CKCU Presents Friday Night Folk, a bi-monthly concert series at Art House Cafe which features a diverse range of folk musicians. Matt also hosts the Hard Folk Podcast shining a light on the working artists making an impact on the Ottawa Music Scene.
Matt Gower has been involved in the Ottawa music community for over two decades. His songwriting incorporates folk, alt-country and old-time music weaved between timeless lyrics and dynamic vocals. Over the years Matt has performed with garage-folk band Capital Grass and the No Men and folk duo Fathom the Sea around the National Capital Region and Western Quebec. Throughout Matt’s musical journeys, a constant thread has held true: nothing carries more weight than connecting with an audience through the power of song.

Your ticket guarantees you a seat in the house but not necessarily a seat with a direct line of sight to the performers. We recommend coming early to snag a spot or if you need accommodations, like a guaranteed seat for accessibility reasons, to please email us at events@thearthousecafe.ca at least 72 hours before the event.
Limited quantity of tickets available. If the event has not sold out online, there will be tickets available at the counter.

IMPORTANT ACCESSIBILITY INFO
We provide gender-neutral washrooms. We have one wheelchair accessible washroom. There is no wheelchair ramp. There is a set of 8 stairs to get into the building (7 steps, small landing, and then an 8th step). Once inside, the whole cafe floor is flat, with the exception of our small room to the side, which is a small step down.
We are licensed to provide alcohol, but serve a variety of non-alcoholic options.
This event takes place on the traditional unceded, unsurrendered territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin People.
