The Curious Case of the Cottingley Fairies
FAIRIES AT FAIRBAIRN: FACT OR FICTION?
Between 1917 and 1920, while the world was immersed in the first “Great War”, two young girls in Yorkshire, England, were playing in a brook and photographed what they purported to be fairies dancing. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of the Sherlock Holmes books) and spiritual leaders of the day championed the legitimacy of the photographs. They were reproduced in publications around the world, feeding a world starved for hope.
Join Theatre Wakefield on the outdoor stage at the Fairbairn House Heritage Centre for The Curious Case of the Cottingley Fairies. The play explores what some say was the biggest hoax of the 20th century. Was it the first example of a “deep fake” that went viral, predating the Internet by 70 years? The play explores childhood, loss, and asks, “What is ‘real’?”. Did any deception actually take place, or did audiences 100 years ago see what they wanted to see, just as we do now?
Planning Your Visit?
Doors open an hour before the performance to enable children and families to create their own fairies and fairy photographs.
Prizes will be offered for the most realistic and creative images. Submissions will be shown on Theatre Wakefield’s web site. A Q&A will be held after the matinee performances. There will be no intermission.
Seating is on the grass in front of the stage. Make sure to bring hats, sunblock, insect repellent, drinks, and a chair or mat to sit on if you wish. In the case of rain, patrons can choose to attend any subsequent performance, including a rain date at the end of the run on Sunday, July 26th.
