Roots and Rhythms

ROOTS FOR RUGRATS: A Raffi free hour of tunes for toddlers and their parents. This episode of R&R features kid friendly folk, r&b, rockabilly and rock and roll. Music for children that wont drive parents crazy. Let the little ones dance before bed.

After a couple of adult themed shows it's time for some sonic treats for the kiddies. A silly, mixed bag of musical styles, from folk to rhythm & blues, country boogie to rock & roll, all of which are child (and parent) friendly. NO Sharon, Lois & Bram, NO Raffi and nothing too cute.
An accoustic start to tonight's show.

"Sugar Chile" Robinson was a boogie-woogie child prodigy. He was only 13 years old when he recorded I'll Eat My Spinach (a Shirley Temple song).Another child star was Little Ralphie Molina, who went on to play drums in Neil Young's back-up band, Crazy Horse. Wynona Carr was originally a gospel singer. Here she sings a silly secular song with the famous Bumps Blackwell Band. Robert "Bumps" Blackwell produced and co-wrote many of Little Richard's first recordings and groomed the early careers of Ray Charles, Ernestine Anderson, Larry Williams, Sam Cooke and Sly & The Family Stone.

Boppin' with the bugs: Lorrie Collins was only 13 when this was recorded in 1955 and her brother (the guitarist) was just 11 years old. Robbie Fulks is part of the alt. country movement. Wedding Of The Bugs is a cover of a Moon Mullican song from 1949. Straight Outta Boone County is a collection of songs from the Boone County Jamboree, a radio show from the American mid-west, done by modern alt. country bands. Link Wray was best known for his guitar instrumentals but here he tackles the traditional children's song Hambone. Webb Wilder gives us his credo which is great advice.

We missed most of it live -- didn't get home in time. I'll play the whole show for Briet when she wakes up -- she'll be happy to hear her name, especially with our new town named in the same breath.
