Six Feet Deep in the Blues

Digging up some great blues from the Past tonight on R&R. Almost all of tonight's tracks feature blues artists who passed away sometime in October over the years... as a kind of Halloween warm-up. Please remember that Funding Drive begins this Friday! #SUPPORTCKCU Donate anytime by visiting the ckcufm.com homepage and clicking the 'donate now' button. Secure & easy... and thanks! Lloyd will be back tomorrow night with a special Halloween edition of Catch 23 on CKCU at 11pm. As always, THANKS FOR LISTENING!
Sick Bed Blues
Skip James - Hard Time Killing Floor Blues
Up next, a cover of another Skip James song, 'Cypress Grove Blues'. Just because... why not?

Scrapper Blackwell - The Virtuoso Guitar of...
Francis "Scrapper" Blackwell also died on October 7th, four years earlier than Smiley Lewis, in 1962 in Indianapolis... Indiana. (Sorry for the confusion!)
Gonna Raise a Ruckus Tonight
Gus Cannon - Walk Right In
Gus Cannon passed away on October 15th, 1979 in Memphis, Tennessee.

The name of the group I was trying to remember (who popularized "Walk Right In" and was featured on the Forest Gump soundtrack, among others) was, in fact, The Rooftop Singers. Now you know!

Barbecue Bob - The Great Depression: American Music in the 30s
Robert Hicks... or 'Barbecue Bob' also died on October 21st, but in 1931 in Lithonia, Georgia.
See That My Grave is Kept Clean
Blind Lemon Jefferson - Anthology of American Folk Music vol. 3B: Songs
Blind Lemon Jefferson died in late December... but he was BORN on OCtober 26th.
I chose this song because it was about a grave, which seemed to fit the theme.
There's a great Hattie McDaniel track I didn't have time to play tonight (she died on Blind Lemon Jefferson's birthday, in 1952), but I'll try to fit it into a future show. Stay tuned!
