Gamelan Winds in the Swedish Night

Tonight the lost archival release by Nightwinds, a set of Swedish drone-rock, and some spice from Indonesia. But first, Nick Drake.

Terry Riley-influenced Swedish psych/raga/drone from the turn of the 70s. The same six musicians make up all three band names below, and four of them (Torbjorn Abelli, Thomas Mera Gartz, Bo Anders Persson, and Arne Ericsson) went on to form Träd, Gräs och Stenar. Related bands from the period (with some crossover personnel) include Mecki Mark Men and Arbete och Fritid.

Nightwinds was a Toronto progressive rock band from the late 1970s who broke up without ever releasing an album. In 1991 the tapes were released as an archive/reissue by the Laser's Edge label of New Jersey. The CD went out of print many years ago and is now impossible to find. Having recently come into a copy, I would like to share it with you in radio land.

Random trivia: the bassist had earlier been in another obscure group called Amish, who have been compared with Deep Purple, and the Nightwinds album was produced by Dee Long and Terry Draper of Klaatu.

A bit of time at the end so we'll close with this one. Bernard Szajner recorded his first album, Visions of Dune, under the name Zed. I played one side of that album on my October 9th show which you can listen to here: http://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/462/19031.html

Szajner went on to release a few albums under his own name, and here is the closing track from the first one to close out this week's show. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you can join me again!
