Peace Brigades International-Canada’s first ever Film Festival We are proud to announce Peace Brigades International-Canada’s first ever Film Festival taking place at Carleton University on March 21st, 2014. We will be screening two films that showcase the impact of foreign companies in Latin America. Through our festival, PBI seeks to provide a channel through which Canadians can learn more about the situations that these communities and human rights defenders face, the work they are doing to fight for justice, and how PBI supports them. The two films we are excited to screen are Gold Fever and 9.70 Documentary. Through the stories of three human rights defenders, Gold Fever explores the impact of North American mining companies on the livelihoods of indigenous communities in Guatemala. The film highlights how many of these communities have been denied a voice in talking about mining issues in their country and are now being oppressed by the actions of foreign companies. Click here to find out more about Gold Fever. 9.70 Documentary looks at the Colombia-US Free-Trade Agreement and the effects it has had for Colombian farmers who want to re-plant the seeds from the crops they grow. The film highlights the experiences that farmers have gone through - including arrests, oppression and persecution - for resisting the commodification of seeds and maintaining their ancestral practices. To end off the festival, we will be holding a panel discussion with guest speakers (names to TBA) who have expertise in the issues discussed in the films and have directly been involved in the fight for justice in Latin America. We hope to provide an in-depth and enlightening look at the situation at hand and allow the audience to get involved in the discussions. Our film festival aims to raise awareness of the human rights situation in Latin America by conveying the stories of those who live through it on a daily basis. At the same time, we want to highlight PBI Canada’s work in this region of the world to make spaces of peace and offer suggestions for how people in Canada can fight for human rights abroad.
