Jacksonville was also the base for two major Southern Rock bands that have shouldered their fair share of tragedy. Gregg Allman has left an undeniable musical legacy and will be missed. Rossington Collins Band were formed after Lynyrd Skynyrd's tragic plane accident in 1977. The Allman Brothers were the originators of Southern Rock.

Tampa is the birthplace of drummer Bobby Caldwell who hit the skins for Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer and formed the influential hard rock combo Captain Beyond with ex Deep Purple vocalist Rod Evans in 1972, leaving after their debut album to form Armageddon with ex Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf in 1975. He also co-wrote many of the songs released on those 2 seminal hard rock albums. He is still active and living in Florida.
