"Could you rewind it?"

At this stage I'm rarely asked to dj live at a discotheque, a rave or music festival. When Junior Smith graciously asked me to briefly dj live at his "Reggae In The Fields 40 anniversary picnic" I had to reluctantly decline because all of the other djs appearing at it would be using laptop computers with dj systems like 'Serato' or 'Tracktor' and there would be no actual turntables available. I still spin records live. A few days later Junior got back to me to say that a set with turntables was going to be provided at the picnic for my exclusive use! In his typical spirit of inclusion, my good friend had pulled strings just so that I could come and help celebrate his anniversary. Of course I came and played. Other dj's there with their digital hardware were so kind and helpful. It was great experience. The response from the crowd was very enthusiastic. One lady even came up to me during my second song and asked "Could you rewind it?". I'm not an expert on those laptop systems although I know that you can't rewind records and a live mix. The best I can do is repeat the full mix here on the air; much more than I was able to play live. Because this radio show has demonstrated my ability to program a staggering variety of different styles and variations of discotheque music, most promoters shy away from booking me because they have no idea what style I would actually spin live. Junior was very specific. He wanted me to spin Funk and funky Disco records. I had initially planned to start the set with a funky mix of "Dancing Queen" by ABBA mixing that into "Jungle Boogie" by KOOL & THE GANG. Those closest to me argued that starting with an ABBA song might be inappropriate for that specific crowd and event. That set is included in this show after the first set of station ids and promotional advertisements. The next time I am spinning live is at the BARNSTORM festival near Finch, Ontario on Aug 20 and 21st. If you want more information about it you can go to barnstorm.ca. At BARNSTORM I'll be spinning live for hours!
