The Guest List
Thursday April 6th, 2017 with Joe Reilly
Interviews with Pretty City and Lynne Hanson

We start the show tonight by talking to the future.. literally... well sort of... yup we spoke with Drew Schapper who is the drummer with the Australian group Pretty City. He called us directly from Australia where it was Friday, April 7 when we chatted. He informed us first and foremost that the future is pretty much like it is right now so a mix of good and bad. (Trump is still President of the USA tomorrow... darn.) We chatted with Drew about the logistics of getting an indie band from Australia on the road in North America and Europe. We also talk about the sound on the band's album Colorize - it's a big, bold rock sound with lots of layered, harmonic guitar sounds. Drew tells us about how he fits into the mix as the drummer... and finally we had to call him on dropping the "U" in colour for the album title "Colorize." Here in Canada we know that all of our Commonwealth friends should be using those "U"s... haha. A great chat with the first artist to call in live from Australia in the 30+ years that the Guest List has been on the air - in fact he takes the award for being the musician who has been the furthest away from Ottawa when calling in!! (We did talk to Robert Forester of the Go Betweens once many moons ago but we think he was in Scotland at the time.) Check out Pretty City at the Rainbow, Sunday March 16th. That's Easter Sunday so bring them some Easter eggs. https://soundcloud.com/pretty-city www.facebook.com/Prettycityband http://therainbow.ca/ Next up we catch up with Ottawa's own Lynne Hanson who has just released a brand new album called Uneven Ground and she will be celebrating that release on Saturday night (April 8) at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield. Lynne was calling in from her soundcheck in Sudbury as she's already busy on the road playing gigs to support the new release. We talk about the influence of great songwriters like Mary Gauthier and co-writing songs with one of the country's best singer-songwriters Lynn Miles (Lynn and Lynne co-wrote a couple of songs on the album including the song "Gotta Have Rain.") The new album bristles with confidence and it really feels like Lynne is coming from a strong place in these songs but she reveals that she does go through times when she has doubts about her songwriting. Hard to believe when you listen to this new album. Don't miss this show at the Blacksheep Inn. https://www.lynnehanson.com/ https://www.theblacksheepinn.com/ Ben Caplan was supposed to join us on the show this week but he's on tour and probably got caught up in something and missed his interview. We played a couple of songs from his terrific album Birds With Broken Wings. Don't miss him in concert at the Shenkman Arts Centre on Friday, April 7. http://shenkmanarts.ca/en/calendar_calendrier/april_avril_2017/ben_caplan_the_casual_smokers/index.htm http://www.bencaplan.ca Finally we played another song from one of last week's guests - Pick A Piper. The group is at the House of Targ tonight (March 6.) Check out their amazing new album and don't miss them in concert. https://pickapiper.bandcamp.com Get out and see some live music this week.
