Music & Beyond highlights: interview with Stepan Jezek of the Bennewitz Quartet; Ensemble Constantinople; pianist Garrick Ohlsson

Today we look at a few highlights from the Music & Beyond festival over the next week, including pianist Garrick Ohlsson who will be performing Scriabin, Brahms, and my favourite Schubert sonata, his devastating A major sonata--his darkest work. Ensemble Constantinople, who are touring with master Senegalese singer and Kora player Ablaye Cissoko, a mix of two of my favourite musical traditions, Persian classical and Mande music from West Africa; their unique mix is breathtaking and beautiful. The Bennewitz String Quartet who will be performing three concerts at the festival, including "Lost in the Holocaust" with music from three Czech composers who were murdered in the Holocaust, and two others with music by Czech composers Dussek, Janacek, Smetana, Dvorak, and Schubert's masterpiece "Death and the Maiden" quartet. Violinist Stepan Jezek from the Bennewitz Quartet will be joining me today to discuss these concerts and we will hear the Bennewitz's recording of the broad and warm Dvorak G major quartet Op. 106.
