As part of its contribution to Asian Heritage Month, the Canadian Film Institute (CFI) is pleased to present "An Evening With Sook-Yin Lee," Saturday, May 5th, at 7:00pm.
The Toronto-based actress, filmmaker and host of CBC’s popular Definitely Not The Opera radio program will travel to Ottawa to present her debut feature film, The Year of the Carnivore, as well as a selection of her short films and to participate in a question and answer session with audience members after the screenings.
Feature film, The Year of the Carnivore is a witty coming-of-age story that doesn't shy away from its sexual subject matter and is partly inspired by Lee's own memories of girlhood sexual confusion.
Three of Lee’s short films are also set to be screened including: Escapades of One Particular Mr. Noodle, an exploration of Lee’s own Chinese-Canadian identity, Girl Cleans Sink, the story of a quiet night at a laundromat that escalates into a one-night stand filled with unpredictable exchanges and Toronto Stories, which sees Lee play a woman trying to define her relationship with a new man in her life.
This special screening will take place at the Auditorium at 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa. Tickets are $12 for the general public and $8 for CFI members, seniors, and students.
“For over 20 years, Sook-Yin Lee has been at the heart of Canada’s arts scene,” says CFI Director Tom McSorley. “The CFI is thrilled to be bringing such a prolific Canadian artist to the Nation’s Capital.”
Sook-Yin Lee was born in Vancouver and quickly established herself within the local music scene as the lead singer of the alternative rock band, Bob’s Your Uncle. She gained national prominence for her work as a VJ at MuchMusic. An accomplished musician, writer, producer, director and broadcaster, she is now based in Toronto where she hosts CBC’s Definitely Not The Opera.
The Canadian Film Institute (CFI) was incorporated in 1935 as a federally-chartered, non-governmental, non-profit cultural organization. It is the oldest film institution in Canada and the second oldest film institute in the world. More information can be found online at www.cfi-icf.ca.
