On February 10, 2012 at St. Andrew’s Church (8 PM), talented young Canadian conductor Bradley Thachuk joins the orchestra with one of the world’s greatest double bass virtuosi, Joel Quarrington, in a program bringing us to the lands of the midnight sun! Danish composer Niels Gade’s Notturno is juxtaposed with Estonian composer, Erki- Sven Tuur and his Insula Deserta. Quarrington joins the orchestra for Canada’s Michael C Baker and his Contours for Bass.

Bradley Thachuk has conducted orchestras and opera in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal, the United States and Canada. He received his Master’s degree and began doctoral studies in conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Mr. Thachuk received a bachelor’s of music performance in guitar from the University of Toronto and is currently Music Director of the Niagara Symphony.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Juno award winner Joel Quarrington was trained in Toronto, Rome, Vienna and Prague. For over thirty years, he has served as the Principal Double Bassist of many ensembles, including the Canadian Opera Company, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. In 2009/2010 he had the honour of leading the bass section of the great London Symphony Orchestra in concerts conducted by Colin Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas and Valery Gergiev.



Michael Conway Baker is considered one of Canada’s most prolific and successful composers, with popular works in a variety of musical genres, including symphonic, ballet, film, TV and special events. He has over 120 film, television, and video music scores.



Niels Wilhelm Gade (1817-1890) was an important figure in nineteenth century Danish music, making his mark as a composer, conductor, organist, violinist and teacher, He furthered the careers of many important musicians and played a major role in bringing Scandinavian music to the world's notice.
